AOA S5.E5: Invisible Work: Solastalgia

AOA Season 5 Ep 5

Molly: Hello and welcome to a podcast about creating experimental art in trauma-informed and sustainable ways that support artists, our communities and the organization as a whole. I'm your host, Molly, and you're listening to Any Other Anythings.

Molly: In this season, we are focused on the latest project being produced by Grey Box Collective. It is titled Positive Ruminations. So this is an event that will feature four new works and each episode of this season of Any Other Anythings will feature conversations from the creative teams developing the new work, and we are really focusing on capturing the process and sharing out the things we find interesting along the way. Hope that you enjoy the season of Any Other Anythings.

Molly: All right, last dialogue. So we have the final piece, theoretically in the evening. And this piece features Delia, john, and Eli. And they are talking about Solastalgia. Reminder that Solastalgia, the piece itself, is focused on the impact of climate change on our bodies and minds and Solastalgia as a word is looking at that feeling of nostalgia that we can't go back to a place that we've wanted to due to environmental changes.

Molly: All right, so enjoy this, this dialogue with this trio.

Molly: So, let's just chat through and like, what are the moments sticking out for us and what we did today.

john: So we kind of took in what we've worked on in the past two rehearsals and start to form, coagulate up into what we've done so far in rehearsal and get kind of a score.

Delia: It's been exciting to have props and playing part of a process right away. And, for me, I'm thinking about how I've been in, like, strictly dance spaces a lot more recently. And so, the props have been an opportunity to create movement that isn't just with my body. We played with lights earlier, and It was really fun to see how the lights were shifting through the space and like that movement that doesn't have to come from the room.

Eli: I'm glad we all still got to work together again. I think when we all get together, we come together. We are all sizes. We are very, like, all of them when I see them. Like I've said before, it's not something I would come up with. It's very different. I like to get to work together, like, bringing all the different things.

Molly: I'm very excited that the overhead projector is working. It seems like it's like this little piece of equipment right now and I like it purely on the fact that we haven't used it sitting in my closet. I think there's also something like when we think about Solastalgia right, it's that idea for feeling nostalgic to something we can't go back to and I think using like retro - I don't know if the projector is retro -

john: Yeah, yeah 20 years.

Molly: Okay, cool. Thank you. I think using like the retro equipment also kind of layers in that like old school nostalgia that I wasn't really thinking about until seeing what was created today.

Delia: I think that like idea of nostalgia and the retro or the old also ties into this like movement we ended up with these like, the sun as a character, and the moon as a character, and this movement, and, and the arch kind of reminds me of that, that one really old silent film that they colored on, where someone like goes off into space, like just like, or, like, an old, old theater where they would just have, like, a cardboard set of waves, like this. Like, that kind of feeling is coming through.

Molly: Anything else that you want to just, like, capture from this first rehearsal, or share about from this first rehearsal?

Eli: It's just that I'm happy that we got to get together again. And yeah, like, the only thing I'm really excited about, especially with like all the ensembles, is that we're all going to come together and create very different things. And yeah, we're all going to get to see it again, but it's also cool that we get to live through the production process. And it's not something that's ever seen when you go to a show.

john: Yeah, I mean, climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, so it's really cool to - and we're living through it, climate change as we speak. We can actually physically feel it. So I think this is a piece that will resonate with everyone because we all have no choice but to be affected by it.

Molly: Hey, listener. Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to check out another episode of any other anything's greatly appreciate your presence.
